Money is the perennial problem for theaters, but this past year it was even more acute. The tight constraints on federal, state and local budgets forced cutbacks on the money allotted arts groups.
Massachusetts, for one, was a virtual budgetary basket case and, as a result, theaters in that state that depend upon grants had to hustle to overcome the shortfall.
As an example, Shakespeare and Company lost $140,000 in grants. It had to cancel a production of "Othello" this summer nd revise its schedule. In order to keep its complement of actors on board, the company at The Mount in Lenox did a larger and longer ...
