New York winemakers are ringing in the New Year with a toast to the rebirth of the state's champagne industry.
"There is a renaissance of sparkling wine in New York," said James Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. "It's come back into its own."
Twenty years ago, champagne was New York's most popular wine, Trezise said. But the fruity sweet champagne made from the native labrusca grapes gradually lost favor to California and European sparkling wines made from vinifera, European grapes such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
