Although a law that took effect on April 1 allows employers to hire teenagers at less than the federal minimum wage of $3.80 an hour, few companies have elected to go below this level, an initial survey has found.
A survey of 167 fast-food restaurants by two university economists found that only two were taking advantage of the $3.35-an-hour wage floor for teenagers, while one more is paying $3.50.
Executives at 83 percent of the restaurants, all part of the Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken or Wendy's chains, said they did not think they could attract acceptable workers at that lower wage.
