If you think most drivers ignore New York's 55 mph speed limit on interstate highways, a report the state is preparing says you're right.
Yearlong monitoring by the Department of Transportation found that eight out of 10 motorists were exceeding the legal limit on interstates in urban areas, where the average speed was clocked by DOT at 62.3 miles an hour.
Nine out of 10 drivers on interstates passing through rural areas violated the speed limit. The average speed observed on those sections was 64.4 miles an hour.
