It was a man who first brought college-educated women together 100 years ago in the Capital District.
In 1890, Melvil Dewey, director of the New York State Library, laid the groundwork for what was to become the Albany Branch of the American Association of University Women, or AAUW.
At that time "college was not big for women," said Marie Creel of Albany, chairwoman of the Oct. 17 centennial celebration of the Albany branch of the AAUW at the Desmond Americana in Colonie. Usually those with degrees were nurses and teachers.
