The nation's prison population reached a record three-quarters of a million men and women by mid-1990 - more than double the number of inmates in 1980, the Justice Department reported Sunday.

For the year ending June 30, the number of people behind bars swelled by more than 80,000 to reach 755,425, said a report from the department's Bureau of Justice Statistics.

"The annual increase of more than 80,000 inmates from midyear 1989 to midyear 1990 was the largest annual growth in 65 years of prison population statistics," said Steven Dillingham, bureau director.
