After watching school field hockey programs in many parts of the country wither away, a United States Field Hockey Associaton official said her sport is getting exactly what it needs: A good, swift kick in the ... kilts.
Noreen Landis-Tyson, assistant executive director for the USFHA, said Wednesday that the growing popularity of soccer among American youths has syphoned off athletes from school field hockey programs.
The effect, she said, has dried up field hockey programs in colleges in the Midwest and West Coast, and put a drain on the number and caliber of athletes trying for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. ...
