Article: EDITORIAL: Food supply needs better protection.

Dec. 20--Given the budget squeeze that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been subjected to in recent years, there's little wonder that the nation's food supply seems to be under a full-scale attack by the E. coli bacteria.

The most recent E. coli outbreak, involving mainly Taco Bell restaurants in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has sickened more than 160 people. The exact cause still is being investigated.

Before that nearly 200 people were stricken with salmonella from tainted tomatoes served in restaurants in 21 states.

And before that, more than 200 people in 26 states were sickened and three died after eating spinach ...
