Up to 95 percent of young wild salmon die after migrating downstream through sea lice from infected fish farms in British Columbia, states a U.S. Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences report about sea lice and salmon farms.
The report's authors, Martin Krkoek and Mark A. Lewis, University of Alberta; L. Neil Frazer, University of Hawaii; John P. Volpe, University of Victoria; and outspoken fish farm critic Alexandra Morton, of the Raincoast Research Society, studied more than 14,000 juvenile salmon in a 37-mile stretch of the salmon's migration route. Also on the route were fish farm net pens.
