The confederation of states that became the United States may have been patterned after the Iroquois league, a federation of Indian tribes that once occupied upper New York state.
Moreover, according to some historians, if the French had been able to make allies of the Iroquois, the most efficient North American Indian organization, they might have won the French and Indian Wars and the United States might have become French.
They didn't, of course, and the rest, as they say, is history.
