The U.S. Census Bureau was hammered by congressional critics Tuesday who accused it of seriously undercounting poor and minority Americans in the 1990 survey.
Census Bureau Director Barbara Everitt Bryant promised a House subcommittee that efforts to review and refine the survey would increase the reported numbers and the accuracy of the count.
Rep. Martin Frost, D-Texas, said that in his district preliminary results from the 1990 count exceeded a 1988 projection in eight suburban, predominantly white counties, while in each of the heavily Hispanic counties, the 1990 count was less than the projection.
