Information can be transmitted through the air using radio waves or microwaves, through copper wires using electricity, or through glass or plastic filaments (called fiber optics) using light. All of these carriers use parts of the electromagnetic spectrum that propagate signals of various wavelengths (measured in cycles per second) and that can be modulated (or modified) in various ways to carry information.
