Researchers have discovered receptors in the brain that are stimulated by marijuana, suggesting that there is a previously unknown chemical pathway in the body using a natural form of the drug.
The work suggests that researchers might eventually be able to develop drugs that do not cause intoxication but have some of the medicinal properties of marijuana, including pain relief, anti-asthmatic action, anti-nausea action and anti-convulsive action.
Researchers also might be able to design entirely new drugs aimed at these receptors that are more effective pain killers.
