In the 1950s, when friends and relatives came from out of town, no one said the first thing they wanted to do was see the Statue of Liberty, Times Square or Central Park.

Those were secondary amusements. First, they all wanted to go to Yankee Stadium.

The subway train would rattle underground along 149th Street from Third Avenue to the Grand Concourse.

Then suddenly it would emerge on River Avenue and there would be the ballpark.
