A resolution approved by the National Council of Churches condemns Christopher Columbus' "invasion" of the New World in 1492, alleging that it resulted in church-supported racism, enslavement of Indians and moral decadence, the council said Friday.
The group also criticized Israeli settlement attempts in East Jerusalem and the "brutal and aggressive" treatment of Muslim and Christians in Israel.
The church council, which represents most major Anglican, Orthodox and Protestant religions, comprises 32 denominations with 42 million members.
