A Soviet military recruiting experiment will test the feasibility of a volunteer army in a break with hundreds of years of Russian military tradition, Defense Minister Dmitri Yazov said Sunday.
Yazov revealed plans for the test in the army newspaper Red Star after months of discussion over whether a military force of 5 million makes sense in an era of decreasing international tension.
"The main thing here is to ensure that with the numerical reductions in the army and navy, the qualitative indicators of their battle potential do not worsen," he said.
