Canadian political leaders gathered Sunday to try to overcome a constitutional impasse that threatens to fracture the 123- year relationship binding French- speaking Quebec and the rest of Canada, which is English-speaking.
Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa told reporters before the dinner meeting that a failure to approve the so-called Meech Lake constitutional amendment would put the country in a state of crisis.
"The least that could be said is there would be political uncertainty," said Bourassa, implying that Quebec would consider seceding from Canada if its demands are not met.
