The isolation of a gene that may put people at risk of becoming alcoholics could hasten the development of a medicine to effectively treat the disease, said Larry Reid, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
"I would predict that within a decade we will have a medicine to help cure the abuse of alcohol," Reid said.
In a paper published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a team of scientists reported they had identified a gene linked to alcoholism. The scientists studied the brains of 35 people who died from alcoholism and 35 non- drinkers. They ...
