Most of the video cassette recorders sold today are moderately priced. But that doesn't mean that they sport just the basics. Each year, low-priced models inherit more features that were once the province of expensive sets.
Recently, Consumer Reports' electronics engineers tested 18 inexpensive VCRs, a step or two up from the bottom of each manufacturer's line. The prices ranged from $240 to $410. Machines like these are adequate for people who watch rented videotapes and record programs that they don't need to hear in stereo.
