While election-year jitters have politicians trying to avoid the abortion debate, the issue is creating a major stir in the AFL-CIO, which represents a quarter of all working New Yorkers.
An increasing number of AFL-CIO members are demanding that their organization take an abortion-rights stance. But those opposed to abortion have flooded the union's offices here and in New York City with thousands of letters insisting that such matters are personal, and not the business of organized labor.
