S hortly after the U.S. Senate upheld his veto of the bill that would have protected Chinese students in the United States, President Bush insisted it is his goal "to further the kinds of things that will help move China forward."
He also cited Deng Xiaoping's history as Chinese leader and pointed out that "the reforms, particularly on the economic side, that brought a new level of prosperity to the Chinese people really were started by him. So, I'm not giving up. I mean, I'm not accepting the status quo at all."
In short, he wants to try to persuade the Chinese leadership under Deng Xiaoping to return to a policy of reform.
