Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, shady plazas and ancient fortification of San Juan, I found myself mentally groping for the elusive quality that makes this vibrant city so unlike any other in the Caribbean Basin.
It came to me as I sat on a bench beneath a plane tree in Plaza San Jose, listening to mellow cello sounds filter from the Pablo Casals Museum and watching the lengthing shadow of a statue of Ponce de Leon, first governor of Puerto Rico.
