The explosion of independence movements in Lithuania and across Eastern Europe show again how ethnicity drives modern politics, Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan said Monday.
Moynihan, a conservative Democrat who for decades has pointed to ethnic conflict as evidence that Karl Marx was wrong about what communism would produce, said, "The new Soviet man did not emerge.
"He was going to be a new Soviet man with no (ethnic) identity, no religious affiliation, and it was doctrine that this would happen.
"I do not say it's good," he added. "I never celebrated this stuff. We just said, 'Here it is. Look at it.'"
