Thousands of Soviet Jews are leaving Moscow for Tel Aviv in a quiet deal that gives Israel a wave of new immigrants in exchange for valuable hard currency payments to the Soviet Union, a senior U.S. official said Tuesday.
An estimated 200,000 Soviet Jews may make the exodus via special flights this year, three times the 1989 number whose arrival in Israel triggered Arab protests and even some U.S. concerns.
