Dec. 21--If a child is diagnosed with lactose intolerance, parents shouldn't be too quick to pull dairy products from the diet, dietitians said.
"The bottom line is their calcium needs still to be there," said Tracy Noerper, a dietitian with the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association. "There are strategies to weave dairy into a diet. It's the time when they're building those bones, putting on their height. That's really the key."
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children need calcium, vitamin D, protein and other nutrients to grow.
