British cheese manufacturers envy their continental European counterparts one thing: their ability to persuade consumers to buy their products.

Average cheese consumption in the UK is about 30g per person per day. In many Continental countries that rises to 50g-55g per day and in Italy and Germany it is 55g-70g.

Cheese has never been the staple of breakfast here as it is in several countries on the Continent, nor does it tend to be used as the centrepiece of any other meal. More often than not, it is relegated to being a side dish or a garnish or an afterthought.
