It was in the fall of 1956 that the Bolshoi Ballet was first seen in England. Beyond the company's vivid style of dancing and its often exotic repertory, the focus of attention was on ballerina Galina Ulanova.
She had been hailed as the most significant dancer in the U.S.S.R. since czarist times - all three Prokofiev ballets were written expressly for her. By the time she first came to the West in 1951, she was already a fabled figure. Her appearances in London and, three years later, in the United States, confirmed the praise that had long been heaped on her.
