Election victories by socialists in two of Canada's 10 provinces in the last week could have important consequences for the federal government's attempts to rewrite the constitution and keep predominantly French-speaking Quebec in the union, political analysts agreed Tuesday.
With the social-democratic New Democratic Party's landslide legislative win in Saskatchewan Monday, coupled with its election in British Columbia last Thursday and last year's takeover of Ontario, socialists now govern 52 percent of Canada's 26 million population at the provincial level.
