The board of trustees of the City University of New York voted Monday night to extend for only one school year the department chairmanship of a professor accused of making anti- Semitic remarks.
The professor, Leonard Jeffries Jr., had said he would not accept any limit on his term as chairman of City College's Afro-American studies department.
The 17-member board's 15 voting members voted 10-4 with one abstention to extend Jeffries' chairmanship until June, at which time his department will vote again on whether to re-elect him.
