The young woman who took special pains not to trip down the bleacher steps as more than 2,000 people watched Saturday afternoon was named the bravest of the State University at Albany's incoming freshmen.
She risked what might have been an embarrassing descent to ask a question of the individual who had proclaimed her bravery, author Maxine Hong Kingston.
The audience cheered when the student got to the standing microphone to ask if the author had kept a journal during college.
