At first, the idea of a compact disc player for the car had that risible, vintage-1980s-self-indulgence ring to it.

Luxury cars offered them, but only as options, suggesting that even the rich had their sense of proportion.

But in the electronics universe, yesterday's most exotic gewgaws have a way of quietly becoming today's no-big-deal, regular-life necessities.

The latest dispatch from the Electronic Industries Association tells us the trend is already under way: Sales of car CD players totaled 600,000 units in 1990; this year, the projected number is between 900,000 and 1.1. million.
