Since he was a teenager, Howard Shaffer has suffered from hay fever, trekking to allergists and other specialists in a futile effort to find relief. These doctors routinely prescribed drugs that, while alleviating his symptoms somewhat, had undesirable side effects.

This spring, when his nose began to run and his eyes turned itchy, he turned as "a last resort" to acupuncture.
