While health officials are reporting a decline in Lyme disease, they are watching the small but growing number of cases of another disease spread by ticks that has been identified only in the past five years.
The disease, called human ehrlichiosis, has now been found in 16 states, most of them in the East and South, according to the federal government's Centers for Disease Control.
"We have reports from one end of the country to the other," said Dr. John Krebs, a CDC infectious diseases specialist.
