With 17 years experience as a lawyer and judge, Clarence Thomas would - if confirmed by the Senate - be one of the least-experienced lawyers on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Only Justice Byron White, 74, with 16 years of legal experience, was less experienced than Thomas at the time of his confirmation in 1962. White, whose legal education was interrupted by World War II, spent 16 years in the law before his Navy pal, President John F. Kennedy, plucked him from the Justice Department and named him to the court.
