Our parents praised it when they weren't pouring it down our throats. Many of us still enjoy this vitamin-rich drink, which some say is nature's perfect food.

But lately, milk, along with cheese and other dairy products, is being pegged as the source of gas pains, diarrhea, nausea, bloating, and other gastrointestinal woes.

People who experience these discomforts after drinking milk or eating dairy products are said to be lactose intolerant. That means they lack sufficient lactase enzymes in their small intestines to break down the lactose - or carbohydrate component - of milk and other dairy products.
