COLUMBIA, S.C.-The U.S. Justice Department wrote a letter to the committee drawing up the 2007 South Carolina state health plan urging the committee not to include a proposed ban on single-specialty hospitals because a ban would have anti-competitive effects. The letter cites a study for the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission that found specialty hospitals didn't financially harm existing acute-care hospitals. The letter noted that Congress has subsequently allowed the federal moratorium on specialty hospitals to expire. Changes in Medicare DRGs for specialty hospitals also played a role in that decision.
