Columbia University, which in the 19th century employed Mozart's librettist as an Italian-language teacher, on Tuesday founded an international academy of Italian culture.

The new Italian Academy in America, funded with $17.5 million from that country's government, is housed in a Renaissance-style palazzo on the school's campus.

To dedicate the center, Italian President Francesco Cossiga, Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti and Foreign Minister Gianni de Michelis joined university President Michael Sovern at a morning ceremony in the rotunda of the Columbia University library.
