Three men drive into the convenience store parking lot at 1 a.m. in a car with a loud muffler. They are laughing and hitting each other as they walk in and examine the beer cooler.

"Right away when that happens, you can feel the fear," said Mike Doherty, a convenience store clerk in Schenectady. "You try not to, but you can't help thinking that this might be the time it happens."

Doherty, 22, a community college criminal justice student, studies crime statistics during the day and prays that he won't become one at night.
