It was the height of the American Century and the country long ago had turned its prodigious war-making capacity toward building bridges, highways and skyscrapers.

That was in 1948, and jobs were in plenty when Hank Landau started work in the construction industry, joining Local 83 of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association.

Landau installed steel decking, ducts for heating and ventilation and other sheet metal assemblies that often had him working as a high climber on construction sites.

"I liked heights, and not many people do, so I had a lot of work," said Landau.
