Unusually large waves of immigrants from Southeast Asia and South Asia in the 1980s transformed the Asian community in the United States, propelling an explosion of diversity among Asian- Americans, the nation's fastest-growing minority, Census Bureau figures show.
The political upheavals and economic hardships that beset Asian nations from Sri Lanka and the Philippines to China and South Korea have sent more than 2 million immigrants across the Pacific Ocean in the past decade, according to federal immigration figures.
