Astronomers reported Monday that they had discovered a dark, mysterious and almost inconceivably massive object lurking within a shell of luminous gas that is circulating around two colliding galaxies at speeds of almost 2 million miles an hour.

If the object is a black hole, it is 10 to 100 times as massive as any black hole previously known or even believed to be possible.

The object's enormous mass puts it in a class astronomers have never encountered before, according to the astronomers who found it.
