Iraq has informed the United Nations that a substantial arsenal of chemical and ballistic weapons survived the Persian Gulf war, although it denies having nuclear arms, nuclear- weapons-grade materials or biological weapons, according to documents made public Friday.

The United States quickly said the inventory was faulty.

The Iraqis' report was delivered on Thursday and released Friday as the first step toward the compulsory destruction of its chemical, biological and nuclear weapons sites.
