Lewis Galoob Toys Inc. and Nintendo of America faced off in court Monday over a Galoob device that could give the Mario Brothers extra power and lives to survive the hazards of Nintendo's popular home video game.

Nintendo is suing Galoob for copyright infringement, saying Galoob's Game Genie toy violates its exclusive right to control its own game displays and spinoff products.

But Galoob, hoping it can loosen Nintendo's hold on the $5 billion video game market, says the Game Genie would give Nintendo users the freedom to get the most out of the games by customizing play.
