When ABC announced next fall's schedule for Saturday morning children's programming, Jennie Trias, the network's vice president for children's programs, had some bad news for girls: Their favorite Saturday morning show, "The New Kids on the Block," the cartoon adventures of the rock band with an enormous pre-teenage following, would be gone.
"Only girls were watching the show," Trias said. "And you have to have boys watching a show for it to succeed."
Next season, the landscape of Saturday morning will not simply be dominated by programs featuring male characters; it will be an exclusive male preserve.
