"Col." David L. Beiter, 71, of Stillwater, is a member of the aircrew of the "plane that ended World War II."
Beiter, a retired state Department of Environmental Conservation employee, is a colonel and a crewman of "Fifi," the only operational B-29 Superfortress Heavy Bomber left from among the 3,960 manufactured for service in World War II. The plane is flown by a Confederate Air Force crew.
Beiter first became familiar with the B-29 as a personnel classification specialist with the 315th Bomb Wing on Guam during the war. After the war ended, Beiter was discharged from the Army Air Force at the rank of sergeant in 1945.
