Pauline is worried about her son.
Suffering from AIDS, he lives alone in a basement apartment in Arbor Hill. Long accustomed to deep fatigue and bouts of pneumonia that accompany the illness, he is beginning to experience memory loss along with severe arthritic and abdominal pains. Sometimes he needs two canes to move around.
His mother, who lives and works in western Massachusetts, fears the time is approaching when Dan, 34, will need around-the-clock care that visiting nurses, home health aides and a mother with a full-time job cannot provide.
