Remarkable, if not telling, was the recent article headlined "Vanishing priesthood: Male celebate clergy dying" that turned up on Page One of a recent issue of The Times Union.

In view of the Catholic priesthood's longevity and its time-tested resiliency, that most daring prophecy seemed to me, a priest of the church, provocative, even breathtaking. Given the somewhat depressing statistics cited in the article - only 17 men from the area are seeking the priesthood - it is not at all surprising that some might mourn (or rejoice) the eventual passing away of the celibate priesthood.
