To some religious believers, certain places take on a sanctity of their own. That's the case with some Muslim sites in Iraq, which that country claims were attacked. Allied officers bluntly deny it.
The accusation, however, makes for emotionally incendiary stuff in the Arab world, where religious passions historically have been readily inflamed. In this case, it strikes a nerve in Islam itself.
Involved are shrines of the smaller, touchier Shiite wing of Islam, historically in conflict with the greatly predominant, steadier Sunni branch. They were lumped together as victims.
