Good news can sometimes be bad news. What appears on the surface to be positive, often obscures a negative trend.

The extraordinarily high number of new cars bought in South Africa during the last year was widely interpreted as a sign that our economy is flourishing. It was probably mostly existing car owners updating their means of transport, but it must also mean that more and more South Africans now use cars rather than public transport.

It surely sounds good that more people now earn enough to enter that middle-class lifestyle of owning their own car. But it is in South Africa's long-term interest that we start reducing the number of private cars, ...
