With the halfway mark of the American Hockey League season almost upon us, it's not too soon to get a clear view of the playoff picture. Well, at least the bottom end.
For all practical purposes, three teams, one in each division, have already been eliminated from Calder Cup fever. They are the New Haven Senators in the North, Hamilton Canucks in the South and Halifax Citadels somewhere in the Atlantic. Collectively, they don't have as many victories as the Binghamton Rangers.
That basically means the AHL's other 13 teams have already clinched a playoff spot. Imagine that. And with just 40-odd games remaining for each.
